How To Choose A Profitable Domain Name

By: Brian Horn on: October 20th, 2010 6 Comments

The name of your website is important if you are selling products or services online. Domain marketing is an important key step to a profitable online business. Without a great domain name, you will have to work hard to draw customers to your website.

Learning about SEO is important when choosing a profitable domain name. It pays to learn what people are searching for on the internet. Do all the research needed before settling on any domain.

Narrow down your niche so that you’re not competing with millions of people. For example, millions of consumers are looking for dog collars. Research deeper and you can narrow it down to organic miniature dog collars.

Having a specific niche can help you choose the right domain. The domain name should have keywords that are searched for by customers.

It should tell people what you are selling when they see your name. If you are selling miniature dog collars but have a domain like “”, it’s not going to help your business.

This is not a domain name that explains what your website is about. A great tip is to visit Google and type in “organic dog collars” with the parentheses around the words. This search will bring up websites with “organic dog collars” in the domain or website content. Visit the first set of websites that come up with Google.

Make a list of keywords and the description of what your website is about. Seeing this on paper will give you an idea of what can work for a domain name. There are many sites like DomainsBot, which will give you domain suggestions with the keywords you input. It will also give you a list of domains that are expiring soon. An expired domain can be a great opportunity for your business if it’s already been on the search engines.

Think like a customer and choose a domain that is memorable. Finding a profitable domain name takes time but having the right domain can grow your online business quickly.

  2. It’s amazing how 2 people think the same without knowing each other. Only a week ago I said the same thing: put your keywords in your domain name. The latent-semantic method dictates it’s rules.
